How to Build a Terrarium

First things first! What is a Terrarium and what purpose does it serve?

Well, a terrarium is an indoor gardening container that holds plants. It is usually made of glass that is fully or partially enclosed to allow heat and light to enter and confine moisture. They can be created purely for decoration, observation, or even plant propagation. Not to mention they look super pretty and can jazz up any space!

If this sounds like something that would interest you then let’s go ahead and move onto how to build a terrarium as well as maintain it.

They can be created purely for decoration, observation, or even plant propagation. Not to mention they look super pretty and can jazz up any space!

If this sounds like something that would interest you then let’s go ahead and move onto how to build a terrarium as well as maintain it.

Materials Needed

OK! So, we’ve decided we want to build a terrarium next step is to figure out what we need to build one. You’re going to want:

·       A glass container

·        Gravel or some small, crushed stones

·        Activated charcoal

·       Moss to help with some filtration

·       Soil

·       Terrarium Plants

How to Build your Terrarium

A few things to consider before we get started here would be how big you want your terrarium and what type of plants we want going in it. A few great examples of plants perfect for a terrarium would be an African violet, Nerve plant, Prayer plant or even a Pothos to name a few.

Once you figured out what kind of plants you want in there then we’re going to start assembling!

Building your Terrarium

Now that you have everything you need to build your terrarium, let’s start assembling!

Seeing as your glass container doesn’t have any drainage in it, we’re going to have to create some to keep excess water away from the plant roots.

We’re going to start with an 1-2 inches layer of gravel or crush stones at the bottom of the terrarium and then we’re going to follow up with about a ¼-1/2 inch layer of activated charcoal on top of those stones to help the draining process and as well as eliminate any bacteria growth. Now we’re going to add a layer of moss over the stones and charcoal to keep that next layer which is the potting soil from mixing in and getting all murky! This also helps with some filtration and a nice visual touch as well.  Next we are going to add about 2 inches of potting soil. We want to make sure that the soil level is low enough the plants will fit inside the container while also maintaining some room to grow!

Now that we’ve created our base layers we are going to go ahead and start adding our plants! Make a small hole for each one to go in and then you’ll want to take the plants out of their nursery pots. If they are a little bit root bound you want to jostle the soil a little bit to loosen those guys up and you’re just going to gently nestle them into the soil layer that you’ve created in your terrarium. Once they are each in their designated spots you’ll want to pat the soil down firmly to limit any air pockets and make sure that those plants are securely in place!

Decorating & Watering your Terrarium

DECORATING:

So now that we have our layers in place and we’ve added our plants, if you’d like you can add a little decorative touch to your terrarium. You can use small figurines, decorative stones or even some seashells if you want it’s completely up to you! Just make sure that we’re not adding too much so we don’t smother our plants.

WATERING:

When it comes to watering your terrarium you want to use a small spray bottle or even a small watering can with a Rose attachment on it which is just a cap with some more yet smaller holes on it to make sure that we are not overwatering and just dampening them.

Maintaining your Terrarium and the Plants Inside

Most terrariums will do best in indirect light. We want to be sure that we’re not cooking our little friends inside that glass bowl and we want to make sure that we’re doing at least two things.

1. You want to feel the soil to see if it’s dry and needs water depending on what type of terrarium you’ve created some will retain water easier than others.

2. You want to remove any damaged or discolouring leaves and prune your plants to a smaller size. We don’t want anything growing super out of hand and also maintaining a healthy look.

That’s it! Now you have created a stunning terrarium piece. These can vary from giant to small! All depends on what you’re wanting!
