Before Bringing Your Tree Indoors

So, you’ve found the perfect Christmas tree and you’re ready to bring it home, but not quite ready to set it up? Your tree will stay fresh as long as you keep it cool and out of the wind and sun (freezing temperatures are okay but avoid repeated freezing and thawing).

When you're ready to bring your tree indoors, make sure to follow this guide to keep your tree happy all holiday season long! With proper care, a live Christmas tree can last 4-6 weeks indoors.

Shake that tree!

Before bringing your tree indoors, shake any loose needles and debris from the tree. Your tree has been growing in a field for at least seven years, so some loose needles and branches are to be expected.

Trim the trunk!

One of the most important steps is to trim 1 to 2" from the bottom of the trunk to allow good moisture uptake. Trim the bottom of the trunk just before you plan to set the tree up.

Remember: the bottom of the trunk must be cut RIGHT BEFORE going in water. If left for even 2 hours, it will seal with resinous sap and dry over, and your tree won't soak up water.

Setting Up Your Tree

Decide on a location for your tree! An ideal spot is somewhere cool, away from direct sun and heat sources like fireplaces, vents, and radiators, which will dry out the tree.

Once you’ve brought your tree inside, place it in a stand with a water reservoir that holds at least 1 litre of water. Have someone hold the tree while another person tightens the stand. Ensure your tree is level and stable!

Watering Your Tree

Your tree will drink 1 to 4 litres a day (more in the first few days, less after). Sometimes, a Christmas tree can even soak up 12L of water in a day, so it’s essential to check water levels a couple of times daily! Ensure the base of the trunk is always submerged in water. If it goes dry, the bottom seals and you'll need to cut it again.

Plain, room temperature tap water is perfectly fine for your Christmas tree. We do not suggest adding anything to it except for Miracle-Gro® For Christmas Trees. Just one capful every time you add a litre of water helps your tree stay fresh by keeping it hydrated and reducing needle drop.

Care & Safety Tips

Test your light strings before you put them on your tree to ensure they are in good working condition. Only use CSA approved lighting accessories. Using low-heat LED or miniature lights will help prevent the needles from drying out.

Avoid combustible decorations and keep metal foil and tinsel away from electrical sockets. Always turn off your decorations before going to bed or leaving home. Make sure your smoke detector is in good working order and never place candles or other open flame sources on or near your tree.
